This way is easier to play, easier to sing, and, IMHO, sounds better.
It also has the advantage that it can readily be raised to suit the
voice with a capo.
Em C
All around you slow decay
G Em
You wanna feel the sun of a new day
Em C
Forget the chances that you lost
G D
You're shedding innocence like falling dust
Em C / / /
All the things you learned too young
Em C
The songs you knew but you never sung
Em C
You waited a long time, you wasted more
G D
Or have you forgotten, what you waited for
Chorus:
Em C
Excuse me ma'am for being so rude
G D
Feels like a hundred years of solitude
Em C
But my mind is numb, but my mouth's ok
G D
And you can listen or just walk away
Em C G D x 2
No solutions built to last
Just your petty scores to settle fast
The NME meant nothing to you
And the maker, well, the maker of who?
Your Walkman generation
In search of sweet sedation
While forests choke under a 'lever sky
And the Exxon birds that will never fly
Chorus
We tried, we cried, we fell, we lied
This life's like one white knuckle ride
Crack babies born too young
And LA kids who will dance to the gun
Forget this so called dirt of mine
It's just the dust and diesel of a passing time
It's all around you, it's a tragedy look,
So forget the cover, and just read the book
Chorus

Keith's version is indeed easier and sounds better that way on an acoustic.
This is as close to the album version as I can get. You can also use a
capo on the second fret so that the chord shapes of Bm=Am, G=F, D=C, and A=G.
Thanks Keith!
